PSL - On a stormy sea of moving emotion...

More often than not, Danielle spent most of her days sitting on a moldering motel bedspread, a rifle across her lap, with one eye on the door to the light-tight bathroom, the other on some crappy soap opera or another. Sometimes she would drift a little. And on very rare occasions, she would dream, seeing watery images of the life she should have known, the shapes running together like water colors.
That morning, her attention wasn't quite so split.
From sunrise until the last lingering rays of sunlight vanished beneath the jagged silhouette of the city, she sat by the motel window and stared up at the sky. Why was it she'd never appreciated how beautiful it was? She could still see a sliver of the moon throughout the day, like a pale, white toenail clipping in the sky. Clouds rolled by, shaped like whipped cream on top of sundaes. And then there was the sun. The big, beautiful, perfect sun.
This...this was what she was being asked to give up. How could she? How could anyone?
But people did. It happened all the time. More often than anyone realized and decidedly more often in her family than was normal.
As the sunlight faded in the west...Danielle wondered if she would ever see it again.

Limited time when they were both awake, unless Dany was willing to sleep through the sunlight, sometimes meant solo work, which meant more danger. And it was understood that Dany would have a turn, sooner or later. This was the path they'd been put on, and orders were orders.
The sun slipped out of sight, and the bathroom door opened a crack, then creaked as it opened the rest of the way.
Shawn adjusted the baseball cap on his head and grunted slightly as he stepped onto the stained motel carpet. Four years of being dead, he still felt groggy after waking up. Hadn't really expected that.
"Any trouble?" It was sort of redundant question, given that she was pretty much where he'd left her. So, on to more important things. "Did Lacey cap her evil twin?"
In the soaps. She'd been cluing him in on some of the recent plot points.

Date: 2015-06-07 01:52 am (UTC)What still rattled her cage was Shawn's strange obsession with Lacey.
"Uh, I don't know," she said, turning away from the window. Her skin still felt warm from the sunlight. "Rerun." Blatant lie. She'd just had too much on her mind to tune in. "The one where Tony and Edita go at it in Max's bed. And, uh, Val proposes to Kym's mother."
Or were those two different episodes?
Probably best to change the subject. "Dude, take a shower. You stink."

Date: 2015-06-07 02:11 am (UTC)There was also the little fact that Kindred didn't sweat. Although... leave a shirt on for enough days, it would still start to go stale. He gave his an experimental sniff.
"Right." Might as well change. Especially for a big night like tonight. He wandered over to his suitcase and flopped the baseball cap onto the motel dresser. As he flipped open the case, he glanced back at her over his shoulder. Sitting at the window all day. Probably watching the sunset. Probably better not to talk about it.
"Tony's a dick. Some people never change."

Date: 2015-06-07 02:19 am (UTC)Running her fingers across the bridge of said nose, she turned to look out the window again. Their hotel was out in the middle of nowhere, the gleaming, looming city sitting on the horizon like teeth biting into the sky. Every pair of headlights she saw along the road, for the next hour or two she was sure, would make her heart jump up into her throat.
Dad would be here soon. Too soon. Way, way, way too soon.
Which left her with little time to make a move.
She'd remained throughout the day. Someone needed to protect Shawn. But he was on his feet now and could take care of himself. All she had to do was win him over, somehow. Get him to cover her tracks, buy her some time. Problem was, Shawn was hard to handle.
Unless you were Dad, of course. Then it was 'Yes, sir' and 'How high?' and all that.
"I was thinking...about Madonna." Yes. Always best to start with sex, when it came to convincing Shawn.

Date: 2015-06-07 03:39 am (UTC)Shawn swapped his plain blue tee for a slightly faded ACDC concert shirt: one of his favorites.
"Course you were. Who wouldn't?"

Date: 2015-06-07 03:48 am (UTC)Rolling her eyes slightly, she tried to pull her thoughts back on track. "She's got a concert coming up in two weeks. In California. If we...left now...we could probably make it."
Okay. So it wasn't her smoothest approach.

Date: 2015-06-12 05:16 pm (UTC)"Two weeks? We could make that drive in four nights, easy." If they didn't get too caught up with work. Actually, that wasn't a bad idea. She might need a way to decompress after this. And that amount of time meant they could take it easy.
If there really was a concert.
"If you really wanna go, we'll take off soon as you're back on your feet." Don't think he couldn't feel those cold feet from across the room. She needed to get up, stop brooding for a minute. He walked over and gave her a light smack on the arm with the back of his hand.
"C'mon. Dad won't be here for a couple hours."

Date: 2015-06-12 09:28 pm (UTC)Danielle couldn't bring herself to be too disappointed or surprised.
Her mind just started churning, trying to come up with some other way to just...go. And she almost missed what Shawn was saying.
Almost.
"Are we going somewhere?" she asked, raising a skeptical eyebrow beneath her dark bangs.

Date: 2015-06-14 04:58 pm (UTC)So she got up, setting the rifle aside, and went into the bathroom.
After taking care of business, she ran the tap in the sink. She washed her hands and her face, but left the water running. There was a revolver duct-taped to the back of the toilet. Standard operating procedure, in case she wasn't able to stop an intruder. She ripped the duct tape off, balling it and shoving it down into her pocket, before neatly tucking the revolver in the back of her jeans.
If she had to run, she couldn't look back. And she might need the protection.
Feeling moderately prepared for anything, she shut off the tap and came out of the bathroom, absently smoothing back her hair. "I hope it's not black tie. I left my pearls in Pontiac."

Date: 2015-06-15 09:52 pm (UTC)"Eh, you've got your dress chucks on. I think they'll let it slide." He pushed off from his spot leaning against the wall and headed for the door. Walking out first, turning his back on her instead of making her do the same to him. A different sort of chivalry.
The Boss was outside, parked and waiting. Shawn occasionally caught flack for the name, but hey. When your car was already called a Ford Mustang Boss, how much better of a name were you gonna come up with on your own?
Shawn climbed into the driver's seat, waited for Dany before starting it up. If she didn't say anything else, he'd pull out of the parking space and onto the highway without a word.

Date: 2015-06-15 10:24 pm (UTC)Except that it was her last night.
For some insane reason, she buckled her seat belt, then leaned back in her seat, feeling the cold press of the revolver against her skin.
"Is this a Dad-authorized field trip?" she asked warily.

Date: 2015-06-16 04:21 pm (UTC)...well, fine.
"He knows we'll be back when we need to." Which he knew was still sort of a non-answer, but hey, sis. Chill.
The drive didn't take them very far. There was a mom-and-pop diner down the road, advertising a full bar with a dimly blinking sign. Shawn pulled into the parking lot.

She frowned a little, unbuckling her belt. A line formed between her eyes. "Looks like hepatitis."

Date: 2015-06-16 09:25 pm (UTC)Inside could have been a scene from their childhood. The place was classic, with booths against the front wall and padded stools at the counter, the sound of a sizzling griddle coming from the back. A bell rang over the door when Shawn pushed it open.
The waitress was a little past her prime, but she had a winning smile as she handed over the menus. "Evening, dolls. Take your time with these, all right?"
As she walked away, Shawn flicked open the first page as if he was thinking about perusing.
"Go on," he encouraged Dany. "Whatever you want."

Date: 2015-06-16 11:14 pm (UTC)Well. No. She'd never been a kid. Not really. But the next best thing.
Danielle took the menu, watching Shawn over the top of the cover. "How'd you find this place?"
Because it seemed like he'd really gone to a lot of trouble.

Date: 2015-06-17 03:00 pm (UTC)But hey. He thought it was pretty cool.
"Remember that stray dog that was sniffin' around the parking lot?" Outside the motel, a couple nights ago. He and Shawn had had a Moment. "I, uh. Asked him where the good human spots were. So to speak. Apparently he goes scratching at the back kitchen door to this place. They throw him a sausage."

Date: 2015-06-17 03:03 pm (UTC)She blinked a few times, her jaw opening slightly. "Are you serious?" she asked, her voice lost somewhere between surprise and incredulity.
Vampires could do that. She knew in a vague, abstract sort of way. But...Shawn getting restaurant recommendations from a dog?
There were way too many ways to react right now.
no subject
Date: 2015-06-17 03:26 pm (UTC)"Yeah. Took me while to pin it down, though. He kept tryin' to tell me about this awesome squirrel nest —"
And that may or may have been serious. But he was cut off as the waitress approached with a carafe of coffee. Shawn turned his cup over, inviting her to pour.
"And can I get anything started for you?" the waitress asked.
Shawn tapped the edge of the cup's saucer with his fingers. "I'll be stickin' with coffee, thanks."
She turned to Danielle next. "How about you, darlin'? Need a minute?"

Date: 2015-06-17 03:34 pm (UTC)"Do you have any Sweet 'n Low?" she asked. The waitress was giving them that annoying, hello-young-lovers look that they got all the time. Why did people always assume that they were a couple?
"Sure, honey. Be right back."
Slowly, Danielle counted to ten before she turned back to Shawn. "Dude, you took a restaurant recomendation from someone who licks his own balls."

Date: 2015-06-17 05:04 pm (UTC)Someday, her face was going to freeze that way.
...maybe she'd be Embraced with it. That was a sobering though.
The bridge of her nose relaxed and she sank back into the booth. "It's great," she said. And she really meant it. "Thanks."

Date: 2015-06-17 06:49 pm (UTC)"Y'know. Figured you deserved it."

Date: 2015-06-17 06:51 pm (UTC)Screw it.
"Shawn," she said softly, "I don't know that I want to go through with it."

Date: 2015-06-19 03:08 pm (UTC)"Yeah," he answered. Like he saw this coming.
